Low-cost handheld device for pupillary and neurological response measurement — MIT Media Lab collaboration

As an LVP-MIT Research Fellow at the LVPEI Center for Innovation, I worked on a collaboration between L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (Hyderabad) and MIT Media Lab to develop high-quality, low-cost diagnostic tools for eye pathology — aimed at fighting preventable blindness.

Pupil+: a handheld binocular device for quantifying pupillary and neurological responses to light stimuli.

Projects

Pupil+ — A handheld device to quantify and measure pupillary and neurological responses to light stimuli. I developed the full hardware system including:

  • Processing unit
  • Illumination system (red LED stimulus)
  • Battery systems
  • I/O units and touch interface

Infant Gaze Tracking — Developed a system to quantify infant response to changing light stimuli without subjectivity, enabling more reliable pediatric eye exams.

Dry Eye Syndrome Detection — Developed an inexpensive, multifunctional device to detect and quantify Dry Eye Syndrome.

Mentorship

I also served as a technical mentor at the 5th and 6th editions of the “Engineering the Eye” Hackathon — teams I mentored placed 1st runner-up in both editions.
